Susan Kare

A Byte of Apple

Susan Kare
Kare is responsible for many of Apple’s typefaces and element designs in the 1980s. Susan Kare sketched by hand many of the early Apple icons, pixel by pixel on small graph paper, basing her designs on her experience with mosaics, needlepoint and pointillism. The world of interface element designs, such as Apple’s now-iconic trash can, lasso and paint bucket tools, owes much to Kare who created them and influenced many of the current symbols we all know.
