What’s really behind Instagram’s upcoming removal of likes?

If you notice the likes on your Instagram feed have disappeared, your smartphone isn’t on the blink. The CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, recently announced the social media behemoth was testing the removal of likes. The reason? Mosseri says the change was to benefit people’s well-being. Facebook and Twitter have also discussed removing likes from their platforms.

But is better mental health the real reason? Should people believe that social media platforms are focused on their users emotional welfare? According to some commentators, the motivation may be more monetary. The current system allows brands to see how much traction their post or influencers’ posts are receiving thanks to the number of likes. And that feedback costs them nothing.

Removing the likes allows Instagram to create a method that advertisers would have to pay for to discover the influencers that perform best to promote and sell their products. And of course, they would pay Instagram for this. So whether or not Instagram is being altruistic or not, what do you think about ditching likes?
