Educating the next generation is vital for us all. Ethos Create recognizes the importance of the community collaborating with educators so we all succeed.
Christine Xoinis, partner at Ethos Create, participated in a panel discussion, Connecting Our Communities with Our Schools for the 21st Century, on January 25, 2017, that included local educators and businesspeople. The education summit, sponsored by the Alamance Citizens for Education, celebrated its 10th anniversary and, in addition to the panel discussion, included remarks from guest speaker Dr. James Merrill, North Carolina Superintendent of the Year, and Dr. William Harrison, superintendent of Alamance-Burlington School System.
When asked about the challenges facing businesses in terms of young employees, Xoinis responded,
“We’ve been going through the hiring process the past three weeks for an entry-level individual straight out of college, and the thing that’s been the most surprising is the expectations that we see in a lot of students. A lot of them feel that when they graduate that they know it all and that they’re going to start at the top, and the fact is … you’re going to start at the bottom, and you know nothing.”
She continued, explaining that recent graduates should consider their first job as just a continuation of their education and focus on their work ethic.
“Students coming out of school now are very smart, … but it’s that work ethic, that very basic thing, that they need to harness.”
