Research your keywords. Want to be the master of SEO? Then you have to put in the work. Your keyword research should be about using the keywords that people are already using to guide and shape the content you create. This isn't the time to wing it. Keywords provide real data if you just take the time to study them and then map out your content plan.
SEO and content marketing are not one and the same. If you aren’t producing quality content, no amount of SEO research or usage is going to get you the attention you are seeking. SEO simply helps you employ the right language to address the questions that people pose in their searches.
Measure your performance. You won’t know if your efforts are effective if you don’t employ some form of measurement. Google Analytics is a great place to start, but it only measures the data you already have, it won’t direct you to things you are missing like long-tail keywords. You need other data sources such as Omniture, too, or marketing automation tools like HubSpot, Marketo, Eloqua or Salesforce.
Take action. Of course the final mistake people make with their content marketing is that they know what they need to do, but aren’t in fact doing it. If you know that changes need to be made in your keyword searches or the quality of your content, then do something about it.
